Learning Opportunities

We provide these learning opportunities for DC residents, parents, youth workers, youth development professionals, and other adults who interact with young people.

Advancing Youth Development (AYD)

Advancing Youth Development Curriculum for Youth Workers (AYD) is a nationally acclaimed course designed for front-line youth workers who interact with adolescents daily. The 15 & 30-hour course is based on curricula from the Center for Youth Development and Policy Research. Seven sessions cover the language of youth development and the history of youth work, the youth development framework, fostering youth participation and leadership, culturally competent programming, program assessment, and professional competencies of youth development practitioners.

Advancing Youth Development for Youth: Navigating Adult Relationships

Advancing Youth Development for Youth: Navigating Adult Relationships is a day-long workshop that teaches young people how to be self-determinant by understanding their own developmental needs and how their needs impact those of the adults in their lives. Young people learn why they do the things they do and how to positively navigate their relationships and interactions with adults in order to get their developmental needs met.

Advancing Youth Development for Parents

Advancing Youth Development for Parents are workshops and training courses that teach parents a peaceful parenting approach based on the youth development framework. Parents learn about various parenting styles and explore how their experiences as children affect and influence their parenting. Parents learn to differentiate between punishment, consequences, and discipline and examine current best practices of parenting. Parents learn how to identify and remove the barriers between adults and children and how to facilitate the positive development of a child.
