Making Connections: Youth Development in Tanzania, Africa
Many of us have been trying to teach our young people to celebrate their history, their origins, who they are and where they come from. All this in the hopes that this knowledge would sustain them and help them survive in a culture that does not celebrate them. What would happen if our youth actually went home to where they could heal and create a reality out of that knowledge of who they—we truly are? What would that look like?
It is time for Making Connections. With all that is going on in the world as we continue to work and strive toward good for our community in general and our young people in particular, I want to share with you and connect you to an inspiring organization and community in Tanzania that has created future for our young people. To me, this community is special because it is an example or model of what is possible for our youth.
I am happy to introduce you to Abdul and Free Shabazz, Co-owners and Directors of the Uhuru Community and Training Center (UCTC) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In their own words:
Uhuru in Tanzania is addressing Education Health and Community on the continent. And creating a foundational point for Repats of the Diaspora, and persons seeking to come home to the continent.
We are a Community& Training Center. Our goal is to provide resources geared towards mental, physical & social well-being for the whole Afrikan Global Community
Join us as we write our own narrative.

Please check out the links that follow. There’s a lot to see here—for the aspiring and inspiring youth worker or program that would like to connect youth in our area to those young people in Tanzania from here who now call Tanzania home; to the youth practitioners who love to share best practices; to the mindful funder seeking to invest and support meaningful change that creates legacy we can see today.
I invite you and I encourage you to check out Uhuru Community and Training Center (UCTC). Then pass it along to anyone you know who wants a glimpse of the possible. “This is what it looks like!”
